The Licensed Practical Nurse/Licensed Vocational Nurse (LPN/LVN), GS-7 performs more complex nursing assignments within their setting. The LPN/LVN possesses comprehensive practical nursing knowledge and skills in specialized procedures and practices. The LPN/LVN GS-7 work is of considerable difficulty and responsibility is performed under general supervision. Individuals in these positions are to a considerable extent, expected to exercise independent technical judgments and to possess and apply a comprehensive working knowledge of the principles, art, and science of practical nursing. Employees at this grade level demonstrate broader knowledge skill with respect to these responsibilities than employees at lower grades.
The LPN/LVN is responsible for goals and interventions that promote veterans in attaining maximum functional potential. This is accomplished through but not limited to modalities such as ambulation, bowel and bladder training, dressing, grooming, bathing, oral hygiene, range of motion exercises and fall prevention modalities. Employees in settings successfully and consistently demonstrate the exercise of independent technical judgment, without the need for readily available supervision, as well as a comprehension and through working knowledge of the most complex of difficult practices and procedures. Such individuals may also serve as leaders in a nursing unit or for a specifically identified group of patients.
The Lead Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) is assigned to Primary Care Clinic (PCC) and serves as the Lead Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse (LPN/LVN). The Nursing Ambulatory Service provides outpatient health care to patients who present with routine, urgent and chronic health needs, change in mental status and/or functional decline. The outpatient clinic setting involves screening the patient for provider, nursing appointments for a variety of acute/chronic conditions, performing EKG's, administering medications or injections, and nursing care.
The Lead LPN/LVN is expected to exercise independent technical judgment in care given to patients and in guiding assigned staff by application of established VA Nursing processes at the team level to promote improved patient care. The Lead LPN/LVN is directly responsible to the PCC Nurse Manager for carrying out identified responsibilities within the scope of their education and licensure. The Lead LVN must work in close coordination with the lead provider and nurse manager of PCC to ensure patient care needs are met. The LPN/LVN engages in nursing care within the assigned clinic which requires the knowledge and skills of an individual licensed as a Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse. Duties within the clinical setting include acquiring vital signs, reviewing clinical reminders, gathering clinical details from patients, administering medications or injections, providing nursing care and treatments for patients. He or she is responsible and accountable for the quality of care delivered to patients, guiding the LPN/LVN staff; and their own personal and professional behavior. The LPN/LVN is knowledgeable in leadership and team building of staff.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
